Peperomia Argyreia or Watermelon Peperomia as it is more commonly known, is a plant native to Central and South America. It is well known for its foliage which look like mini watermelons.
General Care
Watermelon peps are a great plant for indoors or in a protected outdoor area. They have quite a small root base for the size of the plant. Avoid over potting into a large pot. These plants are happy in a smaller pot.
Sunlight
Medium to bright indirect Sunlight. Will not tolerate direct sun, particularly in Australia.
Water
Water these peps once or twice per week, but less so in cooler weather. Allow the soil to almost dry out before watering again.
At Casana Studio we typically grow these babies in small terracotta pots. This prevents the plant from being over watered which can lead to rot. We also regularly bottom water these plants. Simply sit you plant on a saucer and add water to cover approximately the bottom 0.5cm of the pot. Top up as the water dries up!
Humidity
Will tolerate dry air, but prefers high humidity
Common Problems
Drooping can be a sign of under-watering. We have noticed that watermelon peps can also be a little temperamental when there environment is changed. For example, when leaving the shop and transporting home. Simply give your pep some time and it will bounce back.
Yellowing leaves and black stems are a sign of over watering.
